Taking a Tumblr holiday. See you in a week.
I’ve been having a bit of a shit day today… feeling frustrated/itchy feet-like. So I’ve been listening to music to indulge my moody moodiness. It probably isn’t a good idea, but… well, fuck you brain, I’m doing it anyway.
I actually love this album by Blonde Redhead. It ranks fairly high in my favourites of all time and I would probably include it on a Desert Island Discs selection if I was asked. It also happens to help when I’m feeling in a bit of a dull mood.

A new, and apt, track from Marina and the Diamonds for those who aren’t having a lovey dovey Valentine’s day. Typically Marina, it doesn’t disappoint. And it’s free to download until midnight apparently, according to The Guardian. Bonus.
So the weather outside… it’s frightful. Again. It seems that whenever I take extended time off work lately give it a couple of days and on comes the snow. Boo. Although it does mean that I can give full attention to doing uni work.
One class I’m taking this semester is a composition class and for homework I was asked to choose a track which I love and comment on its construction. There were a number of tracks I could have chosen for various reasons but I settled on this particular track, COM(?) by Japanese instrumental band MONO.
I won’t go into a deconstruction of it here as this isn’t the place, but what I will say is don’t let the work instrumental put you off listening as this track is a piece of art which doesn’t suffer because of a lack of lyrical content. If anything it makes you concentrate more on the music, which really is worth a listen.
Could you imagine if the UK entered this kind of music into Eurovision? We might not lose year in, year out. Co-written by Karin Park this is the latest track from Norwegian Pop Idol 2004 runner-up Margaret Berger. Pretty good for a potential Eurovision track, huh?
James Blake has one of those voices which shouldn’t exist inside his body. Close your eyes and listen for a second,… you don’t imagine a skinny English boy with pipes like that.
His is a rather unique and recognisable sound. Soulful, minimalist electronic music which is skillfully and meticulously produced. No wasted layers or beats here. Not too hot or cold, not to hard or soft… it’s just right.
Retrograde is released on Monday 11th February, with his second album Overgrown released April 8th.
Oh my! I got so excited when The Postal Service announcement was broadcast and felt a pang of disappointment when I discovered it was an anniversary re-issue. Guess what today brought? BRAND NEW POSTAL SERVICE MUSIC. OH YES! Disappointment be gone!

I miss brit-pop sometimes.
Of course I was gonna blog the latest track to drop from CHVRCHES. I just wanted to let the buzz die down a little as yesterday seemed to be CHVRCHES hard-on day. Not without reason however, as this track Recover goes to show why they’ve been so hyped. Keep it up CHVRCHES.
French electro-popster Yelle is back with new track L’Amour Parfait, released through Kitsuné on February 11, and it’s a much more murkier and down-tempo track than previously heard from Yelle but all the better for it. New album this year? Please?
Cats have a lot to answer for. They are responsible for me losing MANY HOURS looking at pictures of them in different outfits, gifs of them dancing or falling over… I’m weak to a kitten in a bow tie. And now they’re being used in marketing! That’s it, it’s over. I might as well admit defeat.
I noticed an advert for FIDLAR’s self-titled album on loudandquiet.com’s website featuring a gif of two cats wearing McDonald’s Big Mac boxes on their heads. Hooked, based solely on this banner ad. Luckily the music was good too.
FIDLAR stands for fuck it dog life’s a risk and they do have a pretty fuck it attitude with their skate beach punk style, full of reverb and punchy guitars. It’s perfect for summertime at the beach joshing about in the water with cheap beer. If only it wasn’t freezing February.
I’m posting this again because 1. I can and 2. It’s fucking awesome.
OK, OK… so I’m probably gonna lose a follower or two with this one but you know what… I don’t care.
Dido is the perfect medicine for a lazy Sunday afternoon spent in bed with a headache and the biggest bacon sandwich known to man. March 4th sees the release of her latest album ‘Girl Who Got Away’ and this track is the first taster of what to expect. Like there was ever any question about the content of a Dido album. I say that like it’s a bad thing, but it really isn’t.
Here’s the video for ‘No Freedom’.
Today’s blog post was an easy choice. Pretty much a given. Woodkid released the video for new single I Love You today, which continues the theme from previous videos Iron and Run Boy Run. Beautifully directed, by himself, it’s a joy to watch and listen to. I wish this man could sing me to sleep every night. Hummina.
It’s an early and bold statement, but I have a feeling The Golden Age is going to be my album of 2013.
