Fro-back Friday… I know, lame. But the song’s not.
Janelle day two, but unexpected day two as a friend of mine linked me to this album. Recorded when she was 18/19 it was self-released before she signed to Big Boy Records. I’m yet to listen myself as I’m just outta work… but I’m a little excited!
Janelle Monáe’s The Electric Lady is one of my favourite albums of 2013. The continuing saga of Cindi Mayweather has had me hooked since Metropolis: The Chase Suite and I was not disappointed with how her story progressed. So with that in mind today will be dubbed The Electric Lady: The Singles So Far. Let’s have a li…
Well, I was gonna post the videos for Q.U.E.E.N., Dance Apocalyptic and Prime Time, but her record label have banned playback on Tumblr… So instead let’s go to Spotify and just listen to the whole album instead. And since we can’t see Miguel in all his video glory here’s a picture…
There are a couple of people who I’d love to employ just to sing me to sleep, and it seems a recurring theme is emerging: handsome men with deep, deep man voices. First there was Woodkid, and now I’m adding Daughn Gibson to that list.
Ahem… personal fawning aside, Phantom Rider is the latest track to be released from his second album Me Moan which came out in July through Sub Pop Records. Brooding, moody, atmospheric electronic beats melt with some more traditional instruments and Gibson’s deep, dulcet tones to produce a sound which is fresh and original and definitely worth checking out.
Gander at the video for Phantom Rider above, then go listen to Me Moan on Spotify.
Nothing like a side project to keep those creative juices flowing… and here we have Crosses, a side project from Deftones front-man Chino Moreno. Bitches Brew is the second single to drop from their upcoming album, due early in 2014.
Sundays were made for rest. Even God rested on the seventh day. With that in mind, I present to you the new track from Metronomy. I’m Aquarius is the first single from their soon to be released new album Love Letters and is Metronomy at their simplest and most smooth… smoothness which would give a Galaxy Caramel a run for its money.
Here’s the Soundcloud blurb.

GREAT SONGS FROM UNEXPECTED SOURCES #1
Natalie Imbruglia - Identify
This Billy Corgan-penned track was written as part of the score for the 1999 supernatural God-horror film Stigmata starring Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne. Couple of notes: 1. Stigmata is one of my favourite movies, and 2. I actually like Natalie Imbruglia… like, a lot. White Lilies Island is pretty damn perfect. So,whilst it wasn’t necessarily unexpected that she could deliver what was unexpected was this darker, more melancholic turn from Natalie. This was mostly down to Corgan’s song-writing, however Natalie performs this track with a frailness and vulnerability which makes me stop in my tracks and makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Haunting and beautiful.
Since finishing my music business degree I’ve not been surrounded by as much music, and in a way I’m kinda thankful for that. I’ve definitely not been listening to as much music as I used to… I suppose I was going through a bit of a musical detox. However, as someone who was keeping a music blog this meant the blogging all but stopped. I’m not one for keeping a sporadic blog… what’s the point in that? So… where do we go from here?
I’m not quitting, or shutting this blog down. What I’ve realised from the past few months is that I hate not listening to music as much. It acted as a therapist, it was cathartic. I love the feeling of discovering a new artist, be they old or new… of finding new meanings to tracks you’ve listened to for years. So TIMBLT is coming back, with a vengeance.
To start things off here we have Renaissance Girls by Oh Land from her latest album Wishbone. She has a knack of creating electro-pop with more layers than an onion and Renaissance Girls is no exception.
Have a gander at the video and check out the album Wishbone on Spotify.
I thought rather than post a load of old videos from the ol’ MP3 player I’d go through it and pull together a Spotify playlist I’ve originally called The A to Z of the Sansa Fuze. I did actually have enough bands on it to feature every letter of the alphabet within the playlist, which I thought was pretty cool. It’s quite a varied mix of music… listening to it is bringing back some memories…
Found an old MP3 player in my attic the other day. Forgotten gems! The next few posts are going to be re-discovered tracks from said MP3 player.
A friend of mine from Chicago was kind enough to make me a rather extensive mixtape which arrived in the post a few days ago. This track by Alabama Shakes was one of the early stand-out tracks. Such a soulful, expressive voice… goosebumps man, goosebumps.
The comebacks continue and this time it’s the turn of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip. After a 3 year break the pair are set to release new album Repent Replenish Repeat on October 7.
Stunner is the brilliant first single to drop, accompanied by an impressively slick one-take video, and if you click here - http://www.lesacvspip.co.uk - you can get it as a free download. Cheers guys!
So 1 week turned into almost 6 months. Just a tiny little break then… eep.
We’re back though and also making their comeback are those ex-Suga but no less babes MKS, who are set to release new Dev Hynes produced single Flatline in September. It just goes to show that time is a great healer and chemistry cannot be overlooked. The sound is fresh but unmistakably Origi-babe.
An album is due early in 2014 and we here at TIMBLT-towers are jolly excited. Keep up the good work gals.
Taking a Tumblr holiday. See you in a week.
I’ve been having a bit of a shit day today… feeling frustrated/itchy feet-like. So I’ve been listening to music to indulge my moody moodiness. It probably isn’t a good idea, but… well, fuck you brain, I’m doing it anyway.
I actually love this album by Blonde Redhead. It ranks fairly high in my favourites of all time and I would probably include it on a Desert Island Discs selection if I was asked. It also happens to help when I’m feeling in a bit of a dull mood.
